ASA Announces National Background Check in 2008
Background Checks:
John Spiotta of Bollinger Insurance and Ron Radigonda are working on a program. Little League baseball is making background checks mandatory. Coaches, managers, concession workers, maintenance crews and umpires are
all possibilities of those that will be required to have the check done.

Coaches and managers are at the top of the list because of the one-on-one contact with children. The background check is complicated. Decisions need to be made on what is labeled "red light" or "green light" as far as what the offenses were. Red
light, of course, being unacceptable and "green light" being no threatening. For example: a person that "mooned" or "streaked" as a fad in college, is labeled a sex offender in some states. Additionally, research for Charles Jones vs. Charlie Jones could cause a potential problem.

Lastly, a stolen social security number could again cause the incorrect person to be banned.
A person could have committed an offense in one state, yet moved to another state to coach. The ASA is looking at a national background check, one that is affordable and built into the team/individual registration process.

A projected date for the implementation would be the 2008 season. It is very possible that in 2007 a product will be tested.
