It was a real treat to see one of my former and favorite players notch a goal and an assist in the game against RFH in his first varsity action. Ricky Buonomo has always had the heart of a lion despite his size and he was always a great practice player and hard worker (first one on and last one off the rink). Congratulations Rick it could not have happened to a nicer kid. Great job setting up that goal Danny!!!!

It has been a long hard season boys but you will use that to your advantage going forward. There are lessons learned in every aspect of sport both winning and losing. I see future greatness in your group and I expect to be standing in the Continental Airlines Arena in the next year or so watching you compete for the state championship because I know you all and I think that you are that good. Keep your heads up, get ready for next season and come to camp with a vengeance because winning will be that much sweeter after this season. I love you guys and am always in your corner. Make me proud!

Its been fun watching you Varsity and JV plays, play this year.(LIONS) You all really are trying hard and it has been a tough year, due to so many young ones. but keep the spirit and your heads high, because in the years to come you will be unbelievable.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL YOU SENIOR NEXT YEAR

With most of the games being played during the week this season it has been difficult to get to games, however, I did manage to make the RFH v North, North v South and North v Watchung Hills games. Unfortunately, except for the RFH contest the Lions looked severely disorganized, without a power play and virtually rudderless. It certainly hurts to watch so many of the players with whom I have been associated over the years appear so disoriented. This bench is no longer chock full of senior superstars and so now more than ever before coaching is an issue. Let's go coach, play some of the youngsters down at the end of the bench. They so badly want to show you what they can do. They may not all be superstars but they all have heart (take it from experience I know them all). This appears to be a huge rebuilding year so why not try to catch some lightning in a bottle with some players who will not fly through the practice cones or put the puck between their legs to score a goal but who would bring energy, desire and some moxie to what appears to be a lifeless group. Just a few thoughts.

Middletown North Lions :

During the last two seasons, you've played some pretty exciting hockey!! I thought your 3-2 win over Toms River South in last year's Jim Dowd Cup finals was exciting hockey!! I thought your 3 consecutive 1-goal victories to open last year's State Tournament was exciting hockey!! I thought your 2 straight Mayor's Cup victories over Middletown South was exciting hockey!! I thought that periods 2 and 3 in your 4-2 win over a tough Morris Knolls team on February 5th was exciting hockey!! I even thought that Jesse Walton's sister's battle with her cup of hot chocolate last Sunday was exciting, although the hot chocolate clearly won that battle!! In my opinion though, nothing can compare to the excitement you generated in your come-from-behind overtime/shoot-out win over St. Augustine on Sunday!! Congratulations on snatching victory from the jaws of defeat ... twice!! Best of luck against Bishop Eustace in the Handchen Cup Finals this week and also in the upcoming State Tournament!!

Middletown North Lions :

Congratulations on an awesome week of hockey ... a week that started with a terrific win over Bishop Eustace, continued with a great game against St. Augustine, and ended with an outstanding victory over Middletown South!! During the past two seasons, your team has gotten us hooked on a high school sport that we had absolutely no interest in!! Continue to play SMART and with a lot of HEART ... that's the only way to play ... the only way to WIN!! Best of luck the rest of the way!!

Thanks to Laura Johnson and Laura Wrenson for keeping the web site current and exciting. Thanks to all of the coaches who have done a fabulous job this season and to the players who are super! A special thank you to all the Hockey in Middletown members who have contributed to making all this happen. Gene Shannon who spends endless hours shooting pictures and posting them on the website for both North and South teams, and to Scott Dinella who has been great in keeping all the North statistics- a big thank you to you both. Also a thank you to our Hockey Junkies and all fans who keep the games alive with team spirit. A great season for all.
