2007 Update
This is the first year since 1977 that I have not played softball. Gotta tell you, my body doesn't miss it and either does my wife. With my oldest son Evan, graduating from North Carroll High School and finishing up his High School baseball career making 1st team All-County; as well as Nick who is a freshman playing JV Lax at North Carroll; my time is spent watching them. Dreamers Softball has left behind some great stories and some interesting people to say the least.   Not sure if I am semi-retired or just retired. I am sure some would say I should have retired 15 years ago. Anyway, I will continue to run this site and post news of former Dreamer players.   Enjoy the summer........

Hilda
A Great Lady
Passing of A Great Woman
Hilda Holton passed away and left us with wonderful memories of her and how she loved her Tommy. We will always remember her seeming endless laughter and contagious cheers from the stands. Tommy's Mom fought as long and hard as she could. She left behind Tommy & Tyler to keep the fire burning. I know Tommy will not let his Mother down...

We will miss you Mrs. Holton.

Holton's Have Welcomed Addition
At 1:38pm on Tuesday April 18th Lisa Holton gave birth to Tyler, 9lbs 3 ounces 21 inches tall. Tommy and Lisa are both doing fine. The "Big Guy" is already practicing those head first slides into 2nd base as Tommy has set up a mock infield in the hospital room. Tyler is pretty much a miracle baby, for all the efforts and years of waiting that went into his birth. The Dreamer would like to wish Tyler and his Parents the best as well as his Proud new grandparents Smoke & Hilda.

2006 Season to Open In Joppatown
We will be playing Monday nights in Joppatown @ Magnolia Middle School. Dixie Construction has once again sponsored us in that league. With Tommy's baby arriving and his new job he will not be as available as in the past. Willy and Tony will be kept busy with their kids rec and high school spring/summer sports. So it is up to the rest of you to give Brian and Randy D a hand fielding a respectable team. Gary and Diz are A W O L since the 2005 season ended. Need some help with recruiting, so start making those calls.

One Year Hiatus
It has been 1 year since any entries have been made to the team web-site. Just been too darn busy with the family and work... It happens when we get older. The site will slowly get brought up to speed with 2005 stats and finishing up on 2004's... 2005 started out on a bad note as we lost our sponsorship with US Turfcare. We were under the impression all was well after 2004, however they decided last minute,March 2005, to pull the plug on the sponsorship. That gave us little time to round up a new sponsor. With the help of Julie Rider we were able to get some money from Dixie Construction which enabled us to play in the Joppatown summer Monday Night league. The season started out with 4 loses and poor attendance as some players backed out when we lost our US Turfcare sponsorship.. We picked up free agent Keith McMinn and Jim Stone. Several other players had to be called up from the minors to fill weekly no-shows. We must have saved the best for last as we finished 4th in the regular season with an 10-6 record and proceeded to go undefeated (4-0) in the league tournament to capture the title defeating Rays' team, KA-1.   Without the sponsorship moneys we have avoided any tournament play. We will be going down OC for our yearly Fall Tournament in October. We will try to get another tournament in before that as well..

Dreamers Finish 4th In York Pa.
The season finally came together for the Dreamers in York at the annual Labor Day Tournament. The Dreamers cruised through their bracket going 3-0, then proceeded to take the win streak into Mondays finals with a 6-0 record before losing to Rooks Saloon 15-5 in game 7... The Dreamers lost game 9 to The Sharks who were out to avenge a previous 7-6 loss to the Dreamers on Sunday.. The Dreamers finished 4th out of 82 teams outscoring their opponents 117 - 69.... The Dreamers defense turned 11 double Plays, fielding .932 % as a team... The fans made a strong showing, at one point there were more kids than players.... Texas Hold -Em was the past-time of choice as Tommy went home with more money than he makes in a week.    The addition of Rookie Billy Petzold(.708 ave) proved to be a big plus for the team as he shared tournament MVP honors with Tommy Holton(.778 ave)...

Dreamers finish on a good note Sunday going 2-1 after a 1-3 Saturday at Carroll County Sports Complex... Dreamers finish in 4th place after losing twice to the Woodbine Rebels, once to Della Roses and once to Hammco.. Tommy Holton was named Tournament MVP batting .792 with 18 runs scored and 11 extra base hits.. Diz hit for the cycle(5th career) vs. Delco and also collected 6 hits tieing record for most hits in a game with Brian Reider(10-10-01)... Gary Suzuki rejoined the team, and took the mound vs. Della Roses which turned out to be a very forgettable outing for him. Suzuki ended the game with a 30.37 ERA...   Tim Mullen on DL; Chuck was called into work just before game #4 was to start against Hammco; Turpin took the mound to replace Chuck however he could not find his glove - AGAIN!!!!!   Gary Hallmen contributed Sunday going 9-11 with 8 rbis and 2 Home Runs.... Darrell, Chuck,Reider and Jim played errorless ball in the field.. Sundays oppening game vs. Delco was worth the price of admission as game went 8 innings before Dreamers held off Delco 29-25 in a game that saw a combined 59 hits and 5 lead changes. Diz has DR. Jeckle/Mr Hyde type Tournament -- 4-16 & 1 extra base hit on Saturday while on Sunday he went 9-11 with 5 extra base hits and 11 rbis..... Dreamers leave 10 homeruns unused; Teams clutch average .504, is WAY to low to contend against top teams....

Long way from home
This year the annual Dreamer party was moved to the lovely town of Manchester in the beautiful rolling hills of Carroll County Maryland. Over 33 guests enjoyed a fun-filled reunion with friends and team- mates. Randy was the first to arrive and the last to leave, Gail must be a very understanding wife -- hats off to her. Vic and Laurie brought Laurie's mom, the infamous "Betty"... Jim and Lisa came in the giant lemon on wheels - the Hummer... Evan pulled a Tony M as he lost the burgers tripping up the steps, not to worry we wash the deck once a week... Diz showed up.... There where 9 children under the age of 6 -- Garret tried to take home some extra fertilizer on the bottom of his shoes.... Tommy went undefeated in every game he played (all against the 5 year old group)... Tony could not avoid bringing out the videos, which helped thin out the crowd...   Burgers were a little charbroiled, however Gail found a raw sausage (it wasn't Randys') and the health dept. was called at once...

25 YEARS OF STATS
Gary Swinging
Gary Hallmen
From 1978 to 2003, The Dreamers have accumulated 25 years of statistics that may boggle the minds of some - who might say "SO WHAT"... Looking back to that first year 1978 the Dreamers played in Carney Thurs/Fri league - single games. They went 3-10 scoring 56 runs hitting a collective .357 as a team. Steve Giordani was that years MVP.. Over the years the Dreamers have had the most success in the Joppatowne leagues compiling a 125-15 record for a .893 winning percentage. They captured 1st place 7 times while winning 5 tournament championships in the Joppatowne leagues. Their combined league totals for 25 years is 794-356 for a .690 %, while their tournament record stands at 139 - 89 for a .610 %...

The player with the most at bats in tournaments and league playoffs is Vic Dennison with 868 followed by Willy Fahey with 796. Those who's career league batting averages are above .600% are: Tom Holton .606, Joe McILhenney .601, Ross Franck .616, Mark Dantoni .602 ...(needed at least 500+ at bats to Qualify)...

Who has hit for the cycle? Tom Holton,Robby Smith,Randy Esenwine,Brian Reider,Joe Budelis,Charles McCord,Chuck Hill and Dave Disney who has done it 3 times!! 25 years and 36,229 defensive chances along with 44,685 at bats later the Dreamers are still plodding on now under the new ownership of U.S. Turf Care. Hopefully 2004 will be a record breaking year as the Dreamers go undefeated 90-0, capturing #1 Ranking in the State and traveling to New Orleans for the Worlds in October 2004. If not maybe win can win at least one tournament this year, huh?

Torch Passed On
Evan Picciotto became the 201st Dreamer Sunday as Manager Picciotto sent Evan to the plate at the ripe age of 14. Evan followed in his dads footsteps by dropping his shoulder and popping up twice. When asked if he felt awkward playing for under his dad, Evan replied; " I don't pay any attention to my dad anyway, just like the rest of the players." For just the 2nd time in 26 years, a father/son combination took the field. Mike Hartz and his dad Dave were the first in 2001.

Dreamers 1-2, "D" States
Even with the help of the Squirrel Mascot the Dreamers fell short once again in the D states as the Md. Cougars payed them back for a Frederick Loss earlier in the year by beating them 24-16 in game 3. The Dreamers jumped out to a 9-3 lead before the Cougars answered back with 2 - 7 run innings, scoring in every inning. In game 1 the Dreamers faced the 2002 "E" State champs, State Farm, losing 9-7 in a defensive struggle featuring one of the best defensive plays of the year as second baseman Gary dove to his glove side smothering the ball then backhanding the ball to a sliding Chuck covering 1b. Game 2 saw the Dreamers fall behind 9-0 to Outkast before scoring 8 in the 5th and 10 in the 6th culminated with a walk off Grand Slam by Brian Reider.
The day was not without it's "Special" moments: Top of the list was Brian Reider needing a tampon to absorb the blood oozing out of his belly button from the double hernia opperation on Tuesday. Then we had Chuck's boy Dominic attempting to get into a bat fight with a pit bull; Tony P getting doubled off 1b in game 3; Willy,Tony M and Brian playing kickball in the outfield in game 3; Jeff looking at another 3rd strike with a man on 3b; Jim and Tommy crossing signals at 3b; Dreamers walking 17 times vs. Outkast tieing record, Tony M walking 4 times in same game; Watching the Baltimore Warriors Pitcher, very entertaining!!!!
Tommy 7-13,6 runs scored; Willy 7-10,7 runs scored; Gary 7-14 w/11 rbis; Tony M 4-9 w/5 walks; Jeff 7-12 w/7 rbis; Chuck 3-10; Brian 8-10, 7 rbis & walk off grand slam; Tim Miller 5-12; Vic 5-9 w/4rbis; Tony P 1-2 w/3walks; Mike 2-5 w/3walks; Jim 1-5....

Former Dreamer first baseman John Picciotto is having a tough time of it in Annapolis representing his Company Care First / Blue Cross Blue Shield of Maryland. When asked how he is doing, John replied, "Seems everybody wants to take a wack at me. I think I have more bruises than Jimmy Turpin." We are sure that John longs for those days gone by when he would be home by 1 pm, take a nap and be at the Carney fields by 3:30 smoking a Camel and sitting under the big oak tree in center field. Followed by a night of ball and drinking at the Barn. O well, we all have to grow up sometime. The team said they would dedicate the remainder of the year to their All-Star first baseman only if he agrees to sponsor the team.

The Dreamers coach is under investigation by the IRS after paying cash for his new home. Word leaked out that Tony had been dipping into the team funds for the past 24 years. People started getting suspicious after Tony hired former Kirby secretary, Marie, as General Manager. As Tony was wisked away by federal agents he could be heard screaming, "don't let them change any of my stats."

29-22 & 22-15 Sweeping The Knights of Whinners
Great wins last night, shutting up the headcases with a come from behind 11 run 8th inning in game 1, capped off with a 3 run HR by Mike Ridgell..   Game 2 saw the Knights jump out to an 11 -0 lead after hitting all 3 HRs in the 1st inning. Dreamers fought back while holding the Knights to just 4 runs on 9 hits in the last 6 innings. In Game 2 Dave Disney hit for the cycle while collecting 5 rbis and flashing the leather in LC with his new #22 jersey(that he is sure to lose by the end of June)... Fist time we played this team they had some bush comments directed at Vic for not making a play at 3b, remember - "Put a fork in it"? Then they still complained about the bats even after they beat us 2 games. Last night they started all over again, getting mad when Jim went over to Mike and Jeff while on the mound to tell them he could not cover 1b because of his bad calf. The comment was directed at Jimmy telling him that this is not baseball, no need for conferences. Brian defended Jimmy's meeting and the meathead pitcher went off on Brian telling him he was going to kick his ass, while he was chewing on some roofing nails. Then came the comment about being a lifetime "D" ballplayer or ball team.   All that being said made the "SWEEP" that much sweeter, and helped to shut them up in game 2, notice how they left us alone and started working on the umpire instead... Ross 6-8; Tony 6-9 with 8 rbis & 2 HRs; Jim 7-10 w/6 rbis; Jeff 6-8 w/5rbis; Gary 7-10 w/5rbis. We are now in 1st place at HCC....

Many thought they would never live to see the day that Tommy tied the knot, but on 5/10/2003 "IT REALLY HAPPENED". Yes, Tommy now joins the ranks of the rest of us "Happy Husbands" with his lovely bride Lisa. Mrs Hilda is still pinching herself; she is one happy woman. Much has changed in Tom's life from the days on Park Rd. in Parkville. He actually uses the upstairs in his house now. He uses a riding mower instead of a weed wacker to cut his lawn, his neck is hanging over his shirt collar, and he misses softball games because it is to far to travel. O well, it happens to the best of us. The entire wedding from the church service to the reception was fantastic. The food was delicious and Tom and Lisa seemed to enjoy the time spent with friends and family. Their home looked great and Toms lawn manicuring was a nice touch. However some "bonehead" moments are worth mentioning: Tom's directions to the house sent some of us on our way to the Naval Academy. Then there was Brian trying to cut the cake before Tom and Lisa so he could get a piece. What was up with Gary working on the basement during the reception, you'ld think Tom would give him the day off. How about Mrs. Macs' Toes, if you can call them that? They looked like Vienna Sausages cut in half...   Check out the Photo section on the website for the rest of the Photos taken by MIke -- Team Photographer.... Congrats to both Tom and Lisa,we Love you both and wish you the best.......
