Kansas City Youth Hockey Team Wins Midwest League Championship
Feb. 4, 2008 (Sioux City, Iowa) -- Competing against the top youth hockey teams across Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa, Kansas City’s Russell Stover Stars won the Midwest Amateur Hockey League Peewee AA championship here on Sun., Feb. 3.
Kansas City’s Russell Stover Stars faced the Waterloo Junior Hawks in the championship game. With two minutes remaining in the third period, the Stars were up by one goal when the Junior Hawks pulled their goalie. Soon after, the Stars scored an empty net goal, then scored again in the final minute of play for a 4-1 win.
Russell Stover Stars Peewee AA is comprised of players born in 1995 and 1996 from across the metropolitan area. The team is coached by J-F Quintin, who played for the Kansas City Blades and San Jose Sharks. In his four years as a Stars coach, Quintin’s teams have won the Midwest League championship three times. This is the first championship for the 1995-96 birth year players.
The Midwest League Peewee AA division includes the Omaha Mavericks, Des Moines Junior Buccaneers, Lincoln Stars, Quad City Eagles, Cedar Rapids Stallions, Waterloo Junior Hawks, Sioux City Junior Musketeers, Kansas City Outlaws and Kansas City Russell Stover Stars.
