Welcome to the Portage Northern Husky Baseball web site. Portage Northern is a Division 1 school competing in the SMAC 16 Conference. This web site is intended to keep players, parents, and fans up to date with Husky Baseball happenings. It is also for people not affiliated with the team to see what Portage Northern Baseball is all about.

Huskies Start Fall Ball
Many of the PN players will be in action this fall playing for the Norseman (all PN players) as others are playing for Around the Horn or the Maroons.  Games started the week of September 1 and will go throught the end of October.

Thursday, July 17
Huskies Finish Season 23-10
The Huskies did not reach thier goal of winning a district title, but had an overall successful season.  Post season awards were as follows.  All Conference: Bobby Franks (league co-MVP), Brady Kollin, Jack Livingston, Kyle Shawhan, Jake Engels, Matt Smith.  All District: Bobby Franks, Kyle Shawhan, Jack Livingston, Brady Kollin.  All Area: Bobby Franks. 

Tuesday, May 27
Huskies Coates Pitches Great
The Huskies defeated Climax Scotts 4-0 behind a great pitching performance from Casey Coates.  He allowed 4 hits, walked none, struck out 6 in picking up his 3rd win on the mound this season.  Leading the way on offense was Jack Livingston with two hits.  The Huskies head into districts with a 23-10 record.

Saturday, May 24
Huskies Don't Show Up In GK Final
The Huskies lost 10-0 to Portage Central in the GK Finals.  The Huskies only two hits came from Will Chrystal while the Huskies walked several PC hitters and committed 5 errors.  The Huskies are now 22-10 overall.

Friday, May 23
Huskies Pound Out The Hits vs. St. Joseph
Last night the Varsity Baseball Team pounded out 19 hits to defeat St. Joseph 22-11.  Leading hitters were Will Chrystal, Bobby Franks, and Kyle Shawhan with 3 hits each.  Matt Smith, Taylor Lange, and Cory Commissaris had 2 hits each.  Please come and support the team as they take on Portage Central tomorrow at Western's Hyames Field for the GK Championship at 1:00pm.  The team is now 22-9 on the season.

Thursday, May 22
Huskies Rally Falls Just Short

The Huskies spotted the Wildcats 7 early runs, but battled back in the late innings to just fall short 7-8.  The Huskies were in great shape to take the lead, but a couple controversial calls helped shut down the rally.  Mattawan hit the ball well early, but Jordan Cooper slowed them down coming in relief in the 4th inning.  Leading hitters for the Huskies were Bobby Franks and Brady Kollin with 2 hits each.  Matt Smith hit his first career homerun.  The Huskies are now 21-9 on the season.



Wednesday, May 21
Huskies Sweep Loy Norrix
Last night the Varsity Baseball Team beat Loy Norrix 6-5 and 10-1.  Sophomore Jake Engels picked up the win in the first game, raising his record to 7-0.  Cory Commissaris picked up the win in the second game for his first win of the season.  Leading hitters were: Jack Livingston with 4 hits, Kyle Shawhan with 4 hits including a homerun, Bobby Franks with 2 hits including a homerun, DJ Eaton, Brady Kollin, and Taylor Lange with 2 hits each.  The Varsity Baseball Team is now 21-8 on the season.

Saturday, May 17
Huskies Pound Their Way to GK Tourney Finals
The Huskies unleashed the bats today logging 26 hits in 5-3 and 20-5 wins in the GK Tournament.  The Huskies beat Gull Lake to open the day.  Jake Engles earned his 7th win in zero defeats pitching 6 scoreless innings.  Jordan Cooper and Kyle Shawhan both went deep for the Huskies.  In the second game Brady Kollin picked up the win and Bobby Franks went deep twice, Jack Livingston and Taylor Lange each added a homerun as well.  The Huskies will play next Saturday at Otsego High School in the finals at 1:00pm.  The Huskies are now 19-8 overall.

Friday, May 16
Huskies Split with Sturgis
The Huskies split a double header with Sturgis last night.  The Huskies won the first game 3-2 and lost the second game 6-2.  Jordan Cooper picked up the win in relief of Casey Coates.  Both pitchers threw very well.  Cory Dunn pitched well in the second game, but the Huskies couldn't get the offense going.  Leading hitters were Kyle Shawhan with a homerun and 2 other hits, Will Chrystal, Taylor Langel and DJ Eaton with 3 hits each.  The Huskies are now 17-8 on the season.

Wednesday, May 14
Huskies Sweep Benton Harbor
Last night the Huskies beat Benton Harbor 15-0 and 13-3.  Jake Engels, Brady Kollin, and Corey Commissaris all pitched well for the Huskies.  Leading hitters were Brady Kollin with 4 hits including 3 triples, Jack Livingston and Will Chrystal with 3 hits each, Corey Commissaris and Brian Byers each had 2 hits and Kyle Shawhan had a homerun.  The varisty baseball team is now 16-7 on the season.

Sunday, May 11
Huskies Take Down #2 Ranked Grand Rapids West Catholic
The Huskies continued their winning ways by beating #2 ranked West Catholic 5-4 and 2-1 in eight innings.  Brady Kollin picked up the win in the first game and Jake Engels upped his record to 4-0 by winning the second game.  The Huskies played almost errorless ball during the day and the team was well balanced at the plate.  West Catholic brought in a 23-1 record, but the Huskies proved to be too much on the day.  The Huskies are now 14-6 on the season.

Wednesday, May 7
Huskies Beat Battle Creek Central Twice
Last night the Huskies defeated Battle Creek Central 15-0 and 14-2.  Sophomore pitcher Jack Livingston pitched a no hitter and upped his record to 3-0 on the season.  In the second game sophomore Jake Engels pitched well to earn his third win of the season.  Leading hitters for the Huskies were senior Bobby Franks with 4 hits, including 2 tripples, Jack Livingston and junior Kris Barron each had 2 hits.  The Huskies are now 12-6 on the season.

Sunday, May 4
Huskies Take Two From Caledonia
The Huskies got back on track winning both games at Caledonia on Saturday.  The first game was 10-4 and sophomore Jake Engels picked up the win pitching five solid innings.  In the second game the Huskies won 9-8, sophomore Casey Coates picked up the win going a strong five innings and senior Jordan Cooper picked up the save.  Sophomore Jack Livingston led the way hitting, belting a Homerun, Double, and Triple on the day.  The Huskies are now 10-6 on the season.

Thursday, May 1
Huskies Drop Two to Lakeshore
The Huskies got a good pitching performance from sophomore Jack Livingston, but lost 2-4 in the first game of the double header to Lakeshore.  Kyle Shawhan drove in both of the Huskies runs.  In the second game walks and errors hurt the Huskies as they lost 1-16.  Bobby Franks had two hits including a double.  The Huskies are now 8-6 on the season.  The Huskies have added another game against Lakeshore next Wednesday at Lakeshore.  Game time will be 5:00pm.

Wednesday, April 30
Tale of Two Teams
The Huskies looked like two different teams last night.  In the first game the Huskies lost 15-0 in 4 innings.  The second game they bounced back and won 22-7 in 6 innings.  Bobby Franks led the way with 4 hits including 2 homeruns, Will Chrystal had 3 hits, and Brady Kollin had 2 hits including a homerun.  The Varsity baseball team is 8-4 on the season. 

Friday, April 25
Huskies Beat Buchanan
In a game the Huskies picked up last minute due to Allegan cancelling, the Huskies got a 9-6 win over Buchanan.  The Huskies got a good pitching performance from sophomore Casey Coates giving up only 1 run in 4 innings of work.  Leading hitters for the Huskies were Coates and Matt Smith with 2 hits each.  The Huskies are now 7-3 on the season.

Wednesday, April 23
Huskies Lose a Heartbreaker
The Huskies lost a tough one to rival Portage Central 8-7 last night.  The Huskies could not hold onto a 7-6 lead going into the 7th.  Garrett Rauch flared a base hit into right to score the winning run with two outs and two strikes.  Leading the Huskies were Matt Smith with 3 hits, Bobby Franks and Brady Kollin each had 2 hits.  Brady Kollin struck out 8 and only allowed 3 earned runs.  The Huskies are now 6-3.

Monday, April 21
Huskies Have Rough Weekend
The Huskies did not fare as well as they had hoped to in the Adrian Tournament.  The Huskies started out the day beating Hudson 4-3, but then lost to Adrian 13-3 and Hartland 7-6 in 8 innings.  The Huskies were plagued by walks and errors through out the day.  The Huskies did hit the ball well however.  Leading the way were Jack Livingston and Matt Smith with 5 hits each.  Bobby Franks added 4 hits, Kyle Shawhan and Casey Coates each added 3 hits.  The Huskies are now 6-2 on the season.

Thursday, April 17
Huskies Sweep Marshall
The Huskies stayed hot by beating Marshall 15-0 and 11-1.  Cory Dunn and Jake Engels each picked up the wins on the mound.  Pitching well also was Chris Barron and Casey Coates.  Leading hitters for the Huskies were Bobby Franks with 5 hits, including 2 doubles, Kyle Shawan with 3 hits, Taylor Lange, Brian Bailey, and Jack Livingston each added 2 hits apiece.  The Huskies are now 5-0 overall and 4-0 in league games. 

Tuesday, April 15
Huskies Sweep Mattawan
The Huskies are off to a good start this season by picking up a couple wins against Mattawan.  The Huskies won the first game 14-3 as pitcher Eric Klepper pitched 6 solid innings giving up only 4 hits and striking out 10 Mattawan batters.  Leading hitters for the Huskies were DJ Eaton with 3 hits and Taylor Lange with 2 hits.  In the second game the Huskies won 5-2 behind the solid pitching of Brady Kollin and Jordan Cooper.  The two combined to give up only 2 hits and striking out 6.  Bobby Franks, Kyle Shawhan, Jack Livingston, Brady Kollin, Taylor Lange, and Will Chrystal all had hits for the Huskies.  The Huskies are now 3-0 on the season.

Thursday, April 3
Huskies Open Season With Win!
The Huskies defeated Battle Creek Lakeview by a score of 7-4 in the first game of the season.  The second game was called due to darkness with the Huskies trailing 4-0.  The Huskies had a big 6th inning scoring 7 runs.  Kyle Shawhan delivered a big hit, driving in two runs.  Bobby Franks had a double, Taylor Lange and Cory Dunn each had a hit.  Brady Kollin and Casey Coates combined to pitch a solid 5 innings.  Eric Klepper came in and pitched two scoreless innings to secure the win.  The Huskies are 1-0.
